Out of hours and during a public holiday, Bungie was forced to respond to a firestorm of controversy over the past weekend, after Destiny 2 players discover…
Bungie and Activision announce a Destiny 2 free trial, which will provide access to a chunk of both the story and Crucible multiplayer.
There was a big blowup in Destiny 2 leading into the weekend when it came to light that a hidden scaling system was reducing the amount of XP awarded to players—sometimes dramatically—while simultaneously indicating that it was being given. Caught with its hand in the Pop-Tarts jar, Bungie didn't exactly fess up, but rather said that the system was "not performing the way we’d like it to," and that it had therefore decided to switch it off. Bungie has announced that it will launch a free trial version of Destiny 2 tomorrow that will give gamers who are still on the fence a taste of the single-player campaign mode in two of the game's locales, the European Dead Zone on Earth and the remains of a floating human habitat on the Saturnian moon of Titan. Along with the related campaign missions and opportunity to explore "two full worlds," trial players will be able to join clans and take part in competitive multiplayer combat in the Crucible via the Quickplay list. Player progress will be restricted to level 7, but characters will carry over to the full game if and when it's purchased. Speaking of which, Destiny 2 remains on sale right now on Battle.net—although you can still pick up the standard edition for a few bucks cheaper at Green Man Gaming. Details are up at destinythegame.com.
Throughout three years of Destiny and its sequel, several things have remained consistent. The shooting has always felt great. The aliens have always been fun to kill. And Bungie has always been unable to communicate with players in a way that doesn’t piss them off.
It took a couple months, but Bungie is nearly ready to roll out a trial for Destiny 2. The demo will be available starting tomorrow, November 28 and it's set for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC. This'll be a good way to check out the latter...
